Abstract

The story of Abraham's family in Genesis 12–25 is usually read through calling, covenant, and faith, while marital conflict, power relations, and threats to family survival receive less attention. This study analyzes conflict dynamics, interaction patterns, and faith resilience in Abraham's family and their implications for biblical family counseling, using narrative exegesis of Genesis 12–22, with family-systems and resilience concepts applied heuristically after the text's meaning was established through its literary-theological context. Findings reveal recurring anxiety-control-conflict patterns, triangulation, and avoidance, balanced by de-escalation and renewed orientation to the promise; resilience means refocusing on God's faithfulness after failure, not its absence. Unlike prior studies, which examine isolated episodes—e.g., Genesis 16 or 21 alone—or treat Abraham's faith and family system separately, this study integrates conflict, interaction, and resilience across the whole cycle, proposing a four-step exegetical-practical counseling framework: mapping relational patterns, naming anxiety and power, reorienting to God's promise, and practicing new relational responses.
