Murphy’s Law, often stated as “anything that can go wrong will go wrong,” is widely used to explain failure and uncertainty, including among Christians. This raises a key question: is it compatible with the doctrine of divine sovereignty? This study examines Murphy’s Law using a qualitative approach that integrates systematic theology, biblical analysis, and philosophical reflection, with focus on Job, Ecclesiastes, Romans 8:28, and Genesis 50:20. The study finds that Murphy’s Law reflects aspects of a fallen world, where failure and disorder occur. However, its value is only descriptive and limited. It is not theologically adequate and cannot function as a normative framework. If accepted uncritically, it may lead to fatalism and distort the understanding of suffering. In contrast, the doctrine of divine sovereignty affirms that God works in all events with purpose. Therefore, Murphy’s Law should be treated as an observation, not a theological principle. This study proposes a framework that places human experience within the doctrine of providence while critically engaging cultural assumptions.
