The phenomenon of megachurches in urban contexts demonstrates rapid growth in congregation size and worship quality, yet raises critical questions regarding the depth of interpersonal relationships within large-scale worship services. This study aims to examine whether megachurch worship services foster authentic relational engagement or merely produce broad but superficial participation. The research employs a qualitative approach using a literature-based method with thematic analysis of theological and empirical studies on megachurches, ecclesiology, and koinonia. The analytical framework is grounded in Timothy Keller’s understanding of the church as a relational community. The findings indicate that while large worship services effectively generate mass participation and collective identity, they do not inherently cultivate deep interpersonal relationships. Complex organizational structures and centralized worship patterns tend to limit relational interaction, with meaningful connections more likely to develop within smaller communities outside the main service. This reveals a tension between numerical growth and relational depth. This study contributes a theological evaluation of megachurch practices by proposing an integrative model that connects corporate worship with relational communities as the basis for authentic and sustainable koinonia.
